I went to a shop called Signs on the kingland road today (east) and asked them how much a 1m long neon sign (unmounted) would cost with the brighter logo, and he's said around £350... this is definately do-able I think, and reasonable since Ana was quoted + £500.
He just needs the image of the logo, and I need confirmation and agreement from show commitee, DB and GTS

Vario D7 from POD, made by Octonorm in Germany
The show has 14 of these 800cm by 1850cm backlit pods - each student has half of one each. They are based on a flourescant light incased in a series of diffusing casings and opal acrylic. In our case the work is then inkjetted onto HP backlit film. Your are supposed to present the non-printed side to the fore but we liked the colourfull printed side better, a final clear acrylic sheet is added to protect the work. These units can take paper as well but I haven't done this yet.

This fold-out poster has student details, projects info and their specialisms on one side and on the other the images from our 80's style fashion shoot. Its B1 folded to B4 and has full gloss laminate to one side an is printed by The Colourhouse house Silk 115 gsm CMYK Staccato Full Colour. To make extra vivid colour we used a process which takes an RGB file and translates this into 6 printed colours rather than 4, firstly Pantone Hexachrome, then Picasso and finally ended up using Staccato.
Folders Galore folios
This year our folios were all made to our spec by folders galore based in london including the inserts which were all A4 wide format (bigger than A4) which gives the benefits of A3 layout without the bulk. Students all get to keep their own and nobody else will have the same style (comes in the range of show colours).
Planning a show like this
In order to make 3d objects quickly and 'fly' round and through the space we uses Google's Sketchup software (free) which saved us time in mocking up layouts nd dealing with 3d objects to scale.

Seeing as 'Brighter 2' as a title will only be used once (by us), it seems a little wasteful to me. I realise that the show has to look good, but is there some way of doing it so that future students could maybe recycle our stuff and reuse/alter it at a later date? It just would be nice to know that some of what we're aquiring won't just end up in the bin.

How about something light reflective (like the sequin effect behind Freddy Mercury's statue at the Queen musical, Tottenham ct road)? 'Brighter' doesn't nessesarily have to equal kilowatts!

mmm- neon doesnt have to equal kilowatts either - theres some stuff we covered in the last blog which should be more available by now called led lightrope which is durable and bendable - either into another shape each year or kept as is ie. brighter which can be reused every year. After last year's issues with vandalism it would have to be an indoor afair.
Would also like to know if the power output of neon is very high or not these days - it might not be so environmentally bad after all.
i understand what you are saying christine, but the sign would say 'brighter' not 'brighter 2'. we have decided to keep the same name as it's a good representation of our course and our work. Ana has designed it and it looks great as a neon sign (see her blog) - it could be reused for years to come, or else sold as a decorative piece. afterall, we have raised a lot of money to make the show look as good as possible.
hmm i'll check in the shop next time i pass about the voltage and stuff, but i don't think that it's devilishly un-green of us to buy a neon sign, no?
I was more concerned with it being made and then thrown in the bin, but seeing as it's going to be reused then that's cool. I think energy consumption varies greatly with neon signs, but i'm no expert on this; i guess 2 weeks won't wreck the planet...as i said before, if we are going to buy stuff, i think it's important that they can either be reused, or go to a good home after the show.
