news blackout
Weds night now and the private view is on friday - would love to show you some pics but that would spoil the fun. We have all the work up and 90% of the show is ready. As usual will post some great images when the show starts..

Mmmm!
Today was a very productive day, as we've been making these little things. They're chocolate sponge with coloured icing and sugar sprinkles. Very big thank you to Melissa's mum as she helped us a lot! She started baking at around 7.30 am and we have taken over in the later morning, finishing up at around 6 pm. I think in total there's around 300 cakes, we tried our very best and really hope you all like them! Bon appetite!

big day today
The Motion Zone

Initial layout for digital work in the show. On mouse over image it will light up like a flickering bulb and students details to appear in the space below. On click that persons work will open in a new window on the right hand side.
This is rough for now... so some notes:
- Information area to align exactly with the pods... special colours and numbers etc. Also need to add Marqee font here.
- Current thumbnail images are known to be WRONG images and will be replaced ASAP with the final correct ones which will again match up to the pod.
- Name 'The Motion Zone' just a holder... I thought it was nice and seductive sounding, but its not strictly accurate.

poster folding/backlit pods today
Here's how to fold a B1 poster into B4 which is what will happen to our journal this year. Its being printed in a system called picaso which make the print more colourfull than cmyk. I would love to explain the process to you but everytime I type in picaso and print in google you can image what I have to wade through!

heres the photo side of the poster (click to enlarge if you want a digital momento)

aimee and pedro were first to have their pods printed today..

here's us doing some tests with the pods today, waiting for the rest of the pods to arrive along with the actual opal acrylic. We are using the printed side to display the work which is unusual but we want the images to keep vivid colour and have a more painterly-like colour, feels almost like a screenprint this way round...

electro sign ideas with geoff..
thinking of getting costings on the following signs..
2 arrows for the front inside wall which can be seen clearly from outside when the cargo door is open. have gone for bulbs instead of neon as this means we dont need installation and the signs wont be sensitive to public touch or need safety measures. Arrows point the way into the show.

above the portfolios will go 'seduce me'

..and bottoms up above the bar..

also looking for placement for some of these amazing bits of old signage (examples).

show colours (coated version)

to see these colours better click on the image and drag it onto your desktop then open in photoshop - they really are wrong when seen in a browser.
as ever they dont look exactly the same in blogger but you get the idea. He went for a bluey grey rather than the black just to soften the palette slightly. As you saw from my post yesterday the eighties colours in their full potency need careful handling for a show environment so these were softer alternatives but still neon-like. The pink is leaning more to lavender in the ai file here and the grey is darker too. Teal was chosen and we had it in with a 5 colour palette but dropped it by joining together the black and teal and just having 4. Used about 5 different teals before giving up on it for this selection. Another thing to remember is that the lighting will be darker in the show so these colours will need to cut against that.

Laser logo's

Don't know why we didnt't think of this before but we have a backlit show and have been looking at some 80's and neon influences for colour schemes etc. We threw out the neon because for a small logo of 8"by 40" it would have cost over £400 and for the cover of the journal it is possible to fake a neon sign in pshop/3d. Lasers could give us a logo on the space at any size and with animation if we chose. I will have to investigate the properties of laser light for daytime use but the triangle frontage is dark so it must help? starting link here.
folders galore 1 paperchase 0
Been looking at folios and have now ruled out high street solutions in favour of a bespoke made alternative perhaps from a company like folders galore see these examples...
Notice how there is a hidden clasp so you can screw in ordinary hole-punched hi-quality mylar plastic pockets or whatever you want in that format and the clasp area still looks tidy.
The price as yet is unknown but we certainly would be able to afford the embossing.

another set of ideas from the group for the front of the triangle

building on our earlier ideas for a visual effect of somekind here's an idea from the d&ad annual which in turn has been around for years. These are just tests plus an extra photo for you to adapt and send back. Idea at top... the letters are cut from foam and stuck to the front of the triangle and inside the doorway inverted as if the logo travels through.

Triangle space & Dynamic Suprematism (1916)
.jpg)
Thinking out the box (or the triangle) for a moment Kasimir Malevich (1916)..
(from modernism exhib. last year)...Kasimir Malevich supplies some cerebral coolness, with an oil on canvas entitled Dynamic Suprematism (1916). An empty, pale blue triangle floats against white space. Other forms and shapes are layered against it – random, unidentifiable, clustering together or drifting apart in this infinite half-light.
Malevich said:
Colour and texture in paintings are ends in themselves.
If this sounds like the usual abstract musings of a contemporary artist, what is useful in the V&A's show is the reminder that these artists had a social vision. Malevich developed the ideas behind the genre he called Dynamic Suprematism, in which forms appear to be in flux, because he wanted to:
free art from the dead weight of the real world, the State and Church.
After the Revolution of 1917, he founded a collective called Supporters of New Art in order to promote abstraction as an art form for a new society. Somewhat charmingly (these dizzy artists!) he announced its end in 1919.

This 80's shoe is being reissued in new colourways, this is a semi-graphic treatment for an ad in wallpaper in the 80's neon on black look from the 80's - blogged here as I know some of you are looking at similar colours for the show? (in the original pic all the colours are very bright)
the actual trainers are here and a lot less intresting
although there is an 80's trainers memphis style boom at moment here and here (turn the colour down on your laptop first).

I prefer www.brighterchelsea.co.uk because i think the words look nice together, the word 'chelsea' gives us added status and affliates our work with chelsea, and i don't like numbers in websites i think it looks cheap, especially the number 07 because it reminds me of James Bond. WRISTBANDS, WRISTBANDS, WRISTBANDS.
So after yesterdays conversation, here are the best 3 choices I think we have with regards to sectioning off the VIPs from the common people:

I think this is best - it's paper, it can come of easily, but it tears when it does so it's non transferable to the plebs etc, it comes in neon colours, AND you can print one colour on them (if we want to, i quite like them plain)

These are what's used for many festivals etc, (my sister still has hers on from last summer, the grot-bag) they look nice cause they're woven, but obviously a bit more expensive. I like these, don't know if they have neon threads though...

And these are just an amazing blast from the past. I remember running around the garden with my sister tring to slap eachother as hard as we could with ours. Novelty value - amazing, security - obviously rubbish.

sound bombs

the blurb...
Soundbombs are New-Media-Accessories. Each one a lowtech object for interactive transmission. An integrated soundmodul makes it possible to record any given sound and then activate it through a motiondetector. As a Non-Visual Graffiti, with its origin in streetart, Soundbombs give the possibility to tag a place in an accoustic form: a welcoming greeting at the entrance or a warning of a bad restaurant. Each owner can leave a personal message anywhere and at any time. Soundbombs can whistle, laugh, belch or recite a poem.
One can apply for the purchase of a Soundbomb – only those who deserve a Soundbomb, get a Soundbomb! if one is elected, he/she obtains an unique "accoustic" email addresse (e.g. thud@soundbombs.info).

Ravi is off to have his poster made soon in india (skip the details here until we know more) but if its as big as 6 metres wide where will it go? on a hoarding outside the show or in the parade ground or running at the back of the show or even on top of the triangle space or on the front of the space?

folio quandry/beetlelady

At the moment we use A4 wide folios (oversize A4) from muji (link&pic)
As we will not be using our usual folio holder we can now look at other makes but still based around the oversize A4 model perhaps even binding our own. The muji ones are cheap but they can be a bit floppy and budget looking. Beetle lady here has a guide to binding your own books with decent results.
Please can you post pics of any folios you see here.. thanks
ikea wall-mounted folio holder with reading flap?
could see a row of these with images slipped in behind or one continuous image, could have one per student but they are a bit too big and a bit pricey at £50
perhaps better than led icecubes..

Glow-sticks.org have allsorts of led party geekery on sale. More for our show would be led cups (they change colour slowly over time) or swizzle sticks (led cups on another site). Some really bad items here so would have to be very choosy about which works - buy a few as samples? The cup featured here glows (not led) when hit on a button and the straws illuminate when broken ala glow sticks. General drinks link here.

reflections on floor

In the darkened space we should be able to play up the effect of reflections on the floor from our lightboxes. But with so many people in the space this may become an expensive waste of time for a limited effect. We have a sample from Harlequin of a 'hi-shine' format but it works out at nearly £20 per sq.m and we have nearly 220 sq. m in total!. It may be possible to do a strip infront of the boxes but they are being put everywhere at the moment - best idea so far is to either paint the floor before the show in gloss black but more likely a new coat of the grey thats already there. In the darkness the floor will shine and reflect our boxes and neon with new paint, floor polish or just after a good clean (I tested it yesterday).

Polaroids - click for link

Tarkovsky book polaroids link
Polaroid Fever..
Just thinking about if a polaroid of each person might be good for the mag or to use in a feature somewhere. Just had my head in some Polaroid books recently - very seductive images might be good for publications but harder to use in a larger space like ours. The camera to use is the famous sx-70 land camera with the now out of sale sx-70 film but there is a new stand-in film from http://www.unsaleable.com/
Grass...

Hey guys - this is my set designer friend David White who I used to assist. Anyway this was from a shoot he's recently done. This isn't the real photos from the shoot, just him messing around on the set but i thought it was good to show how the grass could look. I like the tacky 'sky' background, reminiscent of all your old school photos.
Just a little mood board type comment i suppose this is,

goodie bag
Hey guys!
I was wondering if we are having any kind of goodie-bags for those that come to our show. With that in mind, i thought i could offer brazilian products, like for example the brazialian flip-flops havaianas that cost here around 2 pounds each (buying in quantity i could search a better price) and we could have them silk-screened for our show.
Let me know what you think!
I came to Rio for 10 days, i'll be coming back to london on next friday, if you guys want i can take them with me!

trompe l'oeil guerilla advertising
click on these especially the red cross van to see larger...

Had a chat with GTS today - both been looking at guerilla marketing recently and he found the red cross ad here (showing the bay area public what would happen in the event of a quake). The trompe l'oeil effect is great to play with for the triangle in the entrance.
Early suggestion #1 we need to screen the front of the show off because we need to control the light in the triangle space - we could use our new wall system to hold an image, perhaps the front of the triangle as if the door was closed (then add idea for an image on that) - or - the sight of the triangle after a messy show has trashed it (then you get inside and its amazing and very different) - you get kind of idea. Or #2 we create a new front or false section to the triangle that can be seen from a long way off - such as the most bizarre and glamorous people clamouring to get into our show - any way over to you we need your comments and suggestions for ideas here.

Lighting/Back Wall

i love the idea of having some kind of projection/lighting thing on the long back wall, since we have so much haNging space with the pods/walls etc. take a look at this light artist james turell. We could do something like this, it would look great especially since the room will be quite dark due to the pods... what do you think? Anna
projected grass - can also be interactive

see here an interactive installation using the 'processing' software - just goes to show you can always project. checkout the video. as th people move the grass does too although their setup is a really complex version.
grass grass grass!

Someone said they wanted grass in the triangle as the backlit displays look like a sort of forest so heres some info on doing that..
The triangle space would need 260sq.m of to cover its area. Real turf is possible but its hard to work with - heels/mud/going brown etc.
Heres a link for real turf - it works out at £670 inc vat
Heres a fake turf company at around 10 psq.m - £2600! inc vat
Heres the exhibition specialists who do the best stuff for shows their cheapest is £5.50 plus vat a sq.m which is about £1800 in vat - ouch
i'm waiting for another contact for thin trade carpet. We could still add areas of fake grass or fake organic elements such as trees and flowers.
some images..

this company sells grass matts for indoor picnics as seen at the top of this post - fun but pricy.

Neon Sign
I went to a shop called Signs on the kingland road today (east) and asked them how much a 1m long neon sign (unmounted) would cost with the brighter logo, and he's said around £350... this is definately do-able I think, and reasonable since Ana was quoted + £500.
He just needs the image of the logo, and I need confirmation and agreement from show commitee, DB and GTS
What do you all think?

digital festoon (click for link)
Saw this company at the last PLASA show, they have made a cheap lighting system for digital control. They sell you a 'brain' controller box I seem to remember for about £250 this can control an array of up to 200 lamps in any configuration ie. landscape/portrait or spread apart by any distance. Each lamp and holder is very cheap - just add a pc and you can write any image or scroll text etc. Whats so good about this is its cheap and open ended rather than having to fit a certain type of use or enclosure you can drill holes for theses lamp holders in any surface.

We have about 25 bits of this walling system arriving on Tuesday with built-in lighting units. Its available for the show if we need any partitions or walls. They are lightweight and wooden painted white but can be painted any colour.

Upload any lower re image and the rasterbator software gives you back a multi-page pdf file with your image blown up and turned into halftone dots ready to print out on any A4 printer - mono or colour. Been looking at this with Geoff in terms of printing a wall somewhere in the show with the white edges and page numbereing left in (colour?)

We have ordered a number of these backlit exhibition pods for the brighter show this year, they include full-length printing on both sides for each unit - we just have to figure out how to place them and how to apply graphics to them.

recent histories (click here for last year's blog)
Here's a quick catchup for you if you want to see the kind of shows that Chelsea College of Art & Design's Graphic Design Communication BA puts on. Images here from the last two summer showcases and serve as a reminder and a start point for our 2007 show. This year there will be all the great work and polish the course is known for but there's always room for imrovement and the show steering group is digging deep to come up with plenty of new ideas. Alongside the show is our publication 'Brighter Journal' which will be in its second edition this year..full of the best of Chelsea graphics, ideas, features and people.
